PDF Metadata Viewer: what it does
Before you send a PDF, it is worth knowing what it says about you. Drop one here, or many, and see everything that travels with the pages in plain language: the author name, the title, the app that created it and the one that turned it into a PDF, the created and modified dates with their time zone, custom fields, the hidden XMP block and its editing history, names on comments and highlights, attached files, whether the file is digitally signed, and whether it was saved several times with changes added on, which can leave earlier versions of edited parts inside. “All fields” lists every value. If something shouldn’t be there, download a clean copy in one click, or edit the title and author. The PDF is read by your browser and never uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop one or more PDFs into the box, or tap to choose them.
- Read what each PDF reveals: author, title, apps, dates, XMP metadata, comment names, attachments and earlier saved versions.
- Choose whether to keep the title and remove names from comments. Open “All fields” for every value.
- Download each clean copy, or all of them as one ZIP. The pages themselves are copied unchanged.
Tips
- Check PDFs you receive as well as ones you send: the author and app often show who really made a document and how.
- A time zone in the dates (such as +05:00) hints at where the computer that made the file was set.
- “Saved several times with changes added on” matters for documents you edited before sharing: removed text can still be inside the older version.
- Comment names are the reviewer names set in the PDF app, often a full name.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see the metadata of a PDF?
Drop it in the box. The main details are listed straight away, and “All fields” shows every document-info and XMP value we could read. In most PDF readers you can also open File → Properties, but that shows less.
What is XMP metadata in a PDF?
An XML block inside the PDF, used by Adobe apps and many others. It repeats the title, author and dates, and can add document IDs and a history of saves and edits.
Can a PDF show who edited it?
Often, yes: the author field, the app names, the names on comments and an XMP editing history can all point to people and tools. Files saved several times can also keep earlier versions of edited parts.
Can it read password-protected PDFs?
No. Their details are encrypted. Open the PDF with its password in a PDF app and save a copy without protection to check it here.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is read by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to our servers.
