Character Counter: what it does

Paste or type any text to count its characters, words, lines, hashtags and mentions as you type. Below the count, the text is checked against every common limit at once: X posts, Instagram captions and bios, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn posts and headlines, TikTok, YouTube titles and descriptions, Pinterest, Bluesky, Google Business Profile updates and Google’s meta description length. Each row shows whether the text fits, how many characters are left and where the platform cuts it off behind “more”. It works just as well for anything else with a limit: an essay answer, an application form, a product title, an SMS or an ad headline. For one platform only, open its own counter: each counts the way that platform does, for example X counts every link as 23 characters.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box. Your draft stays in this browser only.
  2. Watch the character, word and line counts update as you type.
  3. Check the table to see which platforms and fields the text fits, and how much is left on each.
  4. Click “Copy” and paste the text where you need it.

Tips

  • Writing one caption for several apps? Check the table: if it fits X (the strictest), it fits everywhere else too.
  • Put the hook in the first line. Instagram and Facebook show about 125 characters before “more”, LinkedIn about 210.
  • Forms and application portals usually count spaces and line breaks too, just like this counter.
  • An SMS holds 160 plain characters, but a single emoji or accented letter switches the whole message to a 70-character format.
  • If a caption is too long for X but fine elsewhere, write a short X version instead of cutting mid-sentence.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the characters in my text?

Paste or type it into the box. The character count updates with every key press, together with words, lines, hashtags, mentions and emoji. Spaces and line breaks are counted, because that is how almost every website and app counts them.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation are characters on every social platform and in most forms. If you need the count without spaces, the word counter shows both.

How are emoji counted?

As one character each, because that is what you see. Some emoji are built from several code points (skin tones, families, flags), and X counts every emoji as two, which the X counter handles.

Which platform has the shortest limit?

Among posts, X with 280 characters (unless you pay for Premium). Among profile fields, the TikTok bio at 80 characters and the Instagram bio at 150.
