Brand Name Checker: what it does
Before you print business cards or file a logo, check that the name is free where it matters. Type it once and this brand name checker shows which domains are available, from .com to .shop and .ai, whether the same @username is free on GitHub, GitLab and Bluesky, and gives one-click links to check Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads and Pinterest yourself. Those sites block automatic checks, so your own browser opens the profile address: if it shows nobody, the name is yours to take. When the .com is gone, the checker tries the usual brand patterns (get…, try…, the…, …hq) so you can see at a glance which version is free everywhere. The domain answers come live from the official registries, checked from your browser rather than through our servers, and nothing you type is stored.
How to use it
- Type the name you have in mind, with or without spaces, or a full domain such as yourbrand.io.
- Click “Check”. Each domain ending is looked up at its registry, and the username is checked on GitHub, GitLab and Bluesky.
- If the .com is taken, look at the suggested variations, and tick “More endings” for .dev, .xyz, .uk, .pk and more.
- Open Instagram, TikTok, X and the other buttons to check those platforms yourself, then register your domain at the registrar you prefer.
Tips
- Aim for the same name everywhere: one domain and one @username make you easier to find and to recommend.
- If the exact name is taken on a big platform, a small consistent addition (hq, studio, official) beats a different name on each site.
- Short names are easier to remember, but clear names are easier to find. A name that says what you do is often worth a few extra letters.
- Check that the name doesn’t mean something awkward in the other languages your customers speak.
- Claim the free usernames as soon as you decide, even before you post. Accounts are free; finding the name gone later is not.
- This checks availability, not trademarks. Search your country’s trademark register before you invest in the brand.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if a business name is available?
Type it above to see free domains and usernames. For a company or trading name you also need your country’s company register and trademark search: this tool covers the online side.
Why can’t it check Instagram or TikTok automatically?
Those platforms block automated lookups. Instead, each button opens the profile address for your name in your own browser, which shows straight away whether an account exists.
What does “Couldn’t check” mean?
The registry or site didn’t answer in time, or (for GitHub) the hourly limit for your connection was reached. Wait a minute and check again, or open the link to look yourself.
Is my brand name idea kept private?
Yes. The checks run from your browser directly to the registries and sites; they don’t pass through our servers and nothing is stored.
What if my perfect name is taken everywhere?
Try the suggested variations, add a word that says what you do (bakery, studio, labs), or use your town. Check each idea here until one is free on the .com and the platforms you need most.
