Blur Background of a Photo: what it does

Give any photo the portrait-mode look: the person or product stays sharp while the background melts into a soft blur. The AI finds the subject on your device, then you choose how strong the blur is and download at the photo’s full resolution. It works on photos taken with any camera, including ones where the background was too busy or too sharp.

How to use it

  1. Drop a photo into the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or tap to choose one from your phone.
  2. The first time only, allow the AI model to download (5 MB on phones, about 47 MB for the quick model on computers, about 75 MB for the full HD model). It is saved in your browser, so your photo never has to be uploaded.
  3. Wait a few seconds while the background is removed on your device. Drag the slider to compare before and after.
  4. Choose transparent, white, any colour or a blurred background, then download at full resolution.

Tips

  • A light blur (strength 30 to 50) looks the most natural for people. Push it higher to hide a messy room or a busy street completely.
  • Photos where the subject is clearly in front of the background give the cleanest edges, especially around hair.
  • Want a plain colour instead? Switch to “Colour” or “White”: the same cut-out is reused, so it’s instant.
  • For profile pictures, the profile picture maker crops the result into a circle or square for you.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a blur filter?

A normal blur filter blurs the whole photo. Here the AI first separates the subject from the background, so only the background is blurred and the subject stays perfectly sharp, like the portrait mode on a phone camera.

Can I change how blurry the background is?

Yes. Use the “Blur strength” slider. The preview shows exactly what you will download.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The subject is found by an AI model running in your browser, and the blur is made on your device. Your photo never leaves it.

Does it lower the resolution?

No. The download has the same width and height as your original photo, saved as a high-quality JPG.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Phones use a lighter 5 MB AI model that runs smoothly on mid-range devices. For the sharpest hair edges, use a computer.
