Black and White Photo Converter: what it does
Turn any colour photo into a black and white picture, with the controls photographers use. The lens filter decides how colours become greys, just like the coloured filters used with black and white film: red darkens blue skies and makes clouds stand out, orange smooths skin, yellow is a gentle all-rounder, green lightens foliage, and blue gives a moody, old-film look. Then adjust contrast and brightness. The result is saved at your photo’s full resolution, and the photo is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop a photo into the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or tap to choose one from your phone.
- See the effect straight away. The thumbnails show every other effect on your photo too.
- Adjust the settings, and hold “Hold to compare” to see the original.
- Download at full resolution as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Tips
- Landscapes with sky: try the red or orange filter for dramatic dark skies and bright clouds.
- Portraits: orange or yellow gives smooth, light skin; blue makes skin darker and more textured.
- Black and white needs contrast. If the result looks flat and grey, raise contrast to 20–40.
- For a purely technical conversion (for example for print or a form), use the grayscale tool, which uses standard formulas.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a photo to black and white?
Add the photo and it is converted straight away. Pick a lens filter to change how colours turn into greys, adjust contrast and brightness, then download as JPG, PNG or WebP.
What is the difference between black and white and grayscale?
Both contain only greys. Grayscale uses a fixed formula for brightness; the black and white converter lets you choose how each colour becomes grey (the lens filter) and adds contrast for a photographic look.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers.
