Censor Image: what it does
Sharing a screenshot, a receipt, a letter or a photo, but not the private bits? Drag a box over each one and it is covered with a solid bar in the colour you choose. A solid bar is the safest way to hide text: the pixels underneath are replaced completely, so nothing can be recovered from the saved file. You can also switch to blur or pixelate for a softer look on faces. Your image is processed in your browser and never uploaded, which matters most for exactly the documents you are censoring.
How to use it
- Drop a photo into the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or tap to choose one from your phone.
- Drag a box over each name, number or face to cover. Tap once to drop a ready-made box.
- Pick blur, pixelate or a solid bar under “Hide”, and set the strength.
- Download the new image. It has no location or camera data.
Tips
- Cover the whole line or field, not only the digits: the length of a hidden word or number can give it away.
- Check the corners of screenshots for names, email addresses, profile pictures and notification previews.
- Hide the same detail everywhere it appears: account numbers often show twice on statements and receipts.
- Download the censored copy and share that file. The original on your device is not changed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest way to censor text in an image?
A solid bar. It replaces the pixels completely, so the saved image contains nothing of the text underneath. Blurring or pixelating small text can sometimes be reversed or guessed.
Can someone remove the black bar?
Not from the downloaded image: it is a flat picture, not a layered file, and the covered pixels are gone. (Covering text in a PDF editor or a markup tool is different: there the original can still be underneath.)
Is my document uploaded?
No. Everything is done by your browser on your device, and the censored image is saved directly from it. We never see the original or the result.
