About the Meta Description Length Checker
Google shows roughly 155–160 characters of a meta description before cutting it with “…”. The real limit is pixel width, so wide letters use more space. Aim for the safe range and put the important words first.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the box. Your draft stays in this browser only.
- Watch the count and the “left / over” figure update as you type.
- Check the table to see which other platforms the same text fits.
- Click “Copy text” and paste it into the app.

Tips
- Each page needs its own description; duplicates are often ignored by Google.
- Google may rewrite your description if it doesn’t match the search. A clear summary of the page helps it stick.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Every platform counts spaces, line breaks and punctuation as characters, so the count here includes them too.
Do emojis count as one character?
On most platforms an emoji counts as one character, but some emojis are built from several code points. X counts every emoji as two. This tool counts emojis the way each platform does where that is documented.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Your draft is kept only in this browser so it survives a refresh, and you can clear it any time.
